Despite having numerous means to combat perspiration and body odor, sometimes – during physical activity, stress, or heat – we still have to struggle with wet spots under our arms, and the smell they emit is nothing like roses.

8. Antibacterial hand wash

If your sweat has already started to smell but there is no possibility of taking a shower, carefully clean your armpits with wipes. Then apply antibacterial hand wash – it’ll kill the germs that cause the smell.

7. Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is an antiseptic that fights germs and helps to avoid unpleasant odors throughout the day. Add 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide to half a cup of water, and apply this mixture to dry and clean underarm skin in the morning.

6. Baking soda

If it’s important for you to only use natural remedies, you can try baking soda as an antiperspirant: apply it to slightly moist skin in the morning, then shake off the excess.

If you’re anticipating a hard day involving physical activity in the heat, a homemade “isotonic” will help reduce your sweating:

  • 2 tbsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 liter (1 qt) water.

Drink 1 cup in the morning. If you find drinking it in one go difficult, consume it in small amounts during the day.

5. Oak bark

Oak bark is sold in pharmacies and is considered an effective remedy for excessive sweating. You can rinse your armpits with an oak bark decoction after your shower. Alternatively, you can freeze it into ice cubes, and rub your skin with them in the morning.

Decoction recipe:

  • 5 spoons of ground bark
  • 1 liter (1 qt) water

Add the bark to the water, and let it simmer for 30 minutes. Infuse for 2 hours, then strain.

4. Alunite

The mineral deodorant crystal is a natural analog of conventional antiperspirants. It has no smell, doesn’t leave traces on clothing, and consists of alum (alunite crystals). This mineral has antiseptic, antibacterial, and tonic properties. It also shrinks sweat glands, and the smell disappears. To use the crystal, you need to moisten it with water and rub your armpits. It doesn’t clog the pores and lasts for 1 to 2 years.

3. Aluminum chloride

If the sweating is too profuse, look for antiperspirants with a high content of aluminum chloride – for example, Dry Dry, Odaban, or Maxim. They significantly reduce sweating even in hot weather.

Many have heard that aluminum compounds may provoke breast cancer, but research doesn’t prove the link.

2. Botox

If wet armpits are a regular concern, you can have a botulinum toxin injection. It is used to treat hyperhidrosis, a clinical case of increased perspiration. The toxin blocks the nerve impulses leading to the sweat glands, so sweat is not secreted. The effect of the injection lasts for 6-12 months.

1. Laser

When no antiperspirants help, you need to find out the reason with your doctor. If your diagnosis is hyperhidrosis, the sweat glands can be treated with a laser: this permanently stops their functioning.

Since sweating is involved in heat regulation and removing unnecessary substances from the body, the laser is only applied to increased sweating areas detected by the Minor’s starch iodine test.

Heavy sweating can be a symptom of serious diseases such as heart failure and diabetes. If you noticed that you have started to sweat more than usual, consult a doctor.


Sometimes light clothes turn yellow under the arms from sweat and antiperspirants. To remove the yellow stains, apply toothpaste to them, thickly sprinkle with baking soda, pour some hydrogen peroxide, and then wash. See our video for details:
