To improve your skin health, you don’t have to turn to cosmetologists or spend hours with various masks on your face. You just have to find and eliminate several things that are hiding in our everyday habits.
Bright Side has collected the most common habits that ruin our skin.
15. Using skin care products containing alcohol
Many skin care products contain alcohol that dries out our skin.
We recommend: reading the composition of the product. If you have oily or problematic skin, the alcohol content shouldn’t be more than 5%. As for other skin types, it’s better to avoid using lotions and tonics that contain alcohol.
14. Buying creams in jars
Many facial creams are stored in jars, but it’s safer to keep them in bottles with dispensing pumps: first, you don’t put your fingers in your cream which prevents bacteria from developing, second, most natural ingredients retain their properties for a longer period of time if stored in closed bottles.
13. Washing with ordinary soap
A regular soap dries out our skin.
We recommend: choosing another skin care product (a gel, a tonic, or any other cleanser.) If you use the appropriate product, you won’t experience facial tightness and your skin won’t get oily too fast.
12. Using scrubs
Scrub particles damage dry and sensitive skin and clog pores in oily and normal skin. If you have pimples, it’s prohibited to use scrubs.
We recommend: applying face masks if you want to cleanse your skin.
11. Washing your face too often
Sometimes, especially in summer, we have the urge to wash our face more often because it makes us feel more fresh in the heat. But in reality, washing your face more than 2-3 times a day irritates your skin. The body starts producing more sebum to protect the skin from drying out. And more oil means that acne may occur.
We recommend: using a light cream with a matte finish. To keep your skin fresh during the day, you can also use matte wipes.
10. Using a towel to dry your face
Towels can also cause problems. First, wet fabric is the perfect environment for bacterial growth and bacteria can cause skin inflammation. Second, rubbing your face with a towel damages the skin.
We recommend: changing towels as often as possible. And, don’t rub or wipe your face, dab it.
9. Having many different makeup products
Your skin has to get used to all the products that you use. If you use too many creams and lotions or change them too often, your skin gets dull and irritated because it can’t get used to the new kinds of treatment.
8. Not giving your skin a rest
It’s better to avoid using full-coverage foundations that clog our pores. You also have to wash your face each evening and let your skin rest at least 1-2 times a week.
We recommend: choosing non-comedogenic foundations that don’t clog the pores and sebaceous glands.
7. Running your air conditioner all the time
ACs are everywhere: in the car, at home, in the office and they literally dry out your skin. If you have to spend a lot of time in air-conditioned rooms, find a good moisturizing product.
6. Not getting enough sleep
Lack of sleep causes stress which increases your level of cortisol. This hormone influences the amount of sebum produced and causes premature aging. When we sleep, the level of cortisol decreases and our skin can get some rest. So good sleep is a great beauty remedy.
5. Drinking too much coffee
Those who drink more than one cup of coffee a day should know that coffee makes our skin look dull and may cause widening of the blood vessels or rosacea. If you’re ready to reduce the amount of coffee you drink, you can try other beverages that will boost your performance.
4. Leading a sedentary lifestyle
The work of our circulatory system is depicted in our skin. If you have a sedentary lifestyle, your blood flow changes and your skin gets dull.
We recommend: trying to walk more (at least one hour a day) and add 2-3 workouts a week. You don’t have to lift weights at the gym to make your skin look beautiful, a yoga or Zumba class will suffice.
3. Consuming too much salt
Salt keeps water in the body and causes facial swelling. Keep in mind that even if you don’t add salt to your dishes, there are products that contain really high levels of salt.
2. …and sweets
It turns out that sugar destroys the collagen that is responsible for our skin’s elasticity and for keeping wrinkles at bay.
Fortunately, there are healthy products that can replace sugar.
1. Giving preference to cocktails
It’s all about straws. If you sip your drink using a straw, you’re likely to get expression lines. Don’t laugh, wrinkles occur faster than you think.
Bonus: Don’t forget to take care of your whole body.
Keep in mind that you should also take care of your whole body. Wash your skin after physical activity or after preparing oily food, and avoid oily skin products or over-moisturizing.
